DESCRIPTION:Arcata\, CA– Humboldt Asians & Pacific Islanders in Solidarity (HAPI) invites the community to the first Obon Festival to be held in Humboldt County\, on Sunday\, August 14\, 4-8 PM\, in front of the Arcata Playhouse\, 1251 9th Street\, Arcata. \n  \nObon is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the spirits of one’s ancestors. DESCRIPTION:Arcata Plaza\n9am-2pm April to December / 10am-2pm January to March\nAlways open rain or shine!\n\n\nVisit the Arcata Plaza Farmers’ Market to purchase the freshest Humboldt-County-Grown and GMO-free produce along with plants\, meats and other wonderful products. Educational materials including a seasonal eating guide\, recipes and garden growing guides\, and farmers’ market merchandise items are available at market for your convenience.\n​\n\nThe Arcata Plaza farmers’ market is the largest of NCGA’s markets\, hosting over 70 local farmers and makers at the height of the season. The market as we know it today evolved from the first “Community Producers Market” started in 1978\, and was one of the very first farmers’ markets established in the state.  The Saturday market moved locations a couple times before landing on the Arcata Plaza in the mid-80’s. Since then\, the Arcata Plaza market has expanded to all four sides of the Plaza\, showcasing a wide array of agricultural products from throughout the county. \nFamilies picnic in the grass\, hula hoopers abound\, and spontaneous events pop up from time to time including group tai-chi or the occasional flash mob.  Over the years we have hosted many events at the market including produce tastings\, salsa competitions\, pumpkin contests\, Diversity days\, the Eat Local Challenge and many others. We also continue to partner with Arcata Food Project’s gleaning program\, ensuring any extra produce gets to folks who need it.

DESCRIPTION:Arcata Plaza\n9am-2pm April to December / 10am-2pm January to March\nAlways open rain or shine!\n\n\nVisit the Arcata Plaza Farmers’ Market to purchase the freshest Humboldt-County-Grown and GMO-free produce along with plants\, meats and other wonderful products. Educational materials including a seasonal eating guide\, recipes and garden growing guides\, and farmers’ market merchandise items are available at market for your convenience.\n​\n\nThe Arcata Plaza farmers’ market is the largest of NCGA’s markets\, hosting over 70 local farmers and makers at the height of the season. The market as we know it today evolved from the first “Community Producers Market” started in 1978\, and was one of the very first farmers’ markets established in the state.  The Saturday market moved locations a couple times before landing on the Arcata Plaza in the mid-80’s. Since then\, the Arcata Plaza market has expanded to all four sides of the Plaza\, showcasing a wide array of agricultural products from throughout the county. \nFamilies picnic in the grass\, hula hoopers abound\, and spontaneous events pop up from time to time including group tai-chi or the occasional flash mob.  Over the years we have hosted many events at the market including produce tastings\, salsa competitions\, pumpkin contests\, Diversity days\, the Eat Local Challenge and many others. We also continue to partner with Arcata Food Project’s gleaning program\, ensuring any extra produce gets to folks who need it.

DESCRIPTION:The City of Arcata Recreation Division announced that the 39th Annual\nArcata Lantern Floating Ceremony will take place on Saturday\, August 6.\nThis event is an opportunity to offer spiritual consolation for everyone affected by the pandemic\, those\nwe miss\, departed loved ones\, ancestors\, and all we hold dear. The City of Arcata’s Nuclear-Free Zone\nCommittee started the Arcata Lantern Floating Ceremony 39 years ago to commemorate the U.S.\natomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 and to affirm Arcata’s dedication to the cause of\npeace\, to bring awareness to the dangers of nuclear proliferation\, and to advocate for environmental\nsustainability.\nOn Saturday\, August 6 a lantern-making station will be set up at the Arcata Plaza Farmers’ Market\nfrom 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Materials and lantern-making assistance will be provided to those who would like\nto participate.\nLater that evening\, the ceremony will take place at Klopp Lake\, located in the Arcata Marsh and\nWildlife Sanctuary from 7:30 to 10 p.m. with lanterns entering the water at sunset. The event will be\nhosted by Arcata Mayor\, Stacy Atkins-Salazar\, and will include poetry reading\, shakuhachi flute music\nby Rick Kruze\, Humboldt Taiko\, the Raging Grannies\, and the McKinleyville Choir.\nCeremony attendees are encouraged to walk\, bike or to take a shuttle to the event. To catch a shuttle\,\ncommunity members can park at the Johnson Industry parking lot located near the intersection of Samoa\nBoulevard and J Street near the entrance to the Marsh at Samoa Boulevard and I Street. Shuttles will run\nfrom 7 to 8 p.m. and at the conclusion of the event. There will be no vehicle access at the Klopp Lake\nparking lot\, except for those with a designated Disabled Person (DP) placard or license plate.\nCommunity groups helping to create this event include: the City of Arcata\, Humboldt Buddhist Peace\nFellowship\, GI Rights Hotline\, Shinnyo-en\, Humboldt Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Social Action\nCommittee\, Veterans For Peace\, Humboldt Friends Meeting (Quakers)\, United States Servas and the\nWomen’s International League for Peace and Freedom.\nThe 39th Annual Arcata Lantern Floating Ceremony is free and open for all to attend. DESCRIPTION:We will launch the 27th Annual Sand Sculpture Festival with a fun day at the beach! Five to ten teams will be personally invited to participate during the Saturday\, July 9th event where they will create their sandy masterpieces for all to see. Community members are invited to come view these incredible works of art from 11 am to 5 pm. The best time to view finished pieces will be from 2 to 5 pm.  \n​ \nThe Launch Party will trigger a month long physically-distanced Sand Sculpture Festival taking place until the end of July. During the Dispersed Sand Sculpture Festival\, teams are invited to create their own sandy creations on local beaches\, send photos of their sand sculptures to Friends of the Dunes\, post creations on social media\, vote for their favorites\, and be entered to win exciting prizes. Categories for 2022 will be: Best Cold Oyster\, Best Hot Oyster\, Most Creative\, and the Dave Griswald Award for Best Overall Oyster. \nFriday\, June 24 will feature an evening Kick-off Event under the Big Top Tent in the Creamery Field in Arcata with oysters\, beverages\, presentations\, an expo of local and regional food products and the announcements of the winners from the Best Oyster Contest. Admission is $20 for this event. \nSaturday\, June 25 will feature a full day of music\, food vendors\, beer\, wine\, and local artists from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in a fun festival at the Creamery Field\, just a few blocks from downtown Arcata. Saturday Admission is $15 (includes a cup). Kids under 12 are free. Popular community contests will return\, and all will be live-streamed via the Arcata Main Street YouTube channel. \nAs Arcata Main Street’s largest fundraiser\, Oyster Festival helps us fulfill our mission to promote a vibrant downtown Arcata for our businesses and community.
